A journey that began with securing one of Hollywood's most treasured licenses: the STAR TREK TNG license, became the most ambitious software undertaking to date for developer Spectrum Holobyte. STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION "A Final Unity" is based on one, if not the, most successful syndicated television series of all time. And now the STTNG ambiance has been packaged with interactive graphics, sound, and theatrics which are Star Trek accurate. | Review | |
STAR TREK: THE
NEXT GENERATION® "A Final Unity"©
STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION "A Final
Unity" incorporates several technological achievements,
including lifelike miniature 3-D animation, authentic digitized
sound effects and music, and the voices of the seven principal
actors from the popular television series. Each actor, including
Patrick Stewart, Brent Spiner and Marina Sirtis, individually
recorded more than 60 minutes of dialog for the game, allowing
for different turns and directions of the characters and action
within the main story line without loosing authenticity. Their
dialogue incorporates situational context so their response,
including intonations and manner of speaking, reflect the current
circumstances in the game. Combined these effects create mood.
Holobyte spoke
during production saying: "The road to this point
has been long, but we believe the end result will be a game that
we can truly be proud of and one that consumers will love and
play time and time again because of its depth and attention to
detail," Louis Gioia, Jr., Chief Marketing Officer of
Spectrum HoloByte, Inc. They were indeed right about consumer
reaction. Holobyte's creation lived up their expectations
resulting in worldwide distribution even today, long after it was
made.
Taking the
Starship Enterprise to warp speed,
whether in response to a distress call or in retreat, is quite an
emotional experience, especially for Trekkers. Deciding how best
to utilise personnel, which star-system to explore next, or which
orders take priority are just a few of the decisions that players
want to an do make when they embark to "A Final
Unity." The game is rich with STTNG detail of
space civilisations, the Bridge, the Trek characters and their
history. It provides instant appeal and an authentic introduction
to fans new to STAR TREK. The CD-ROM also offers
hints within the game to help guide the gaming novice.
